We asked the mums in the 2am Club one question: what actually got you through the night feeds? Here's what they told us, in their own words.
1. Set up before you sit down
“Keep snacks and water where you feed. You'll be so glad you did.”
Once you're settled with a feeding baby, you're not getting up. Keep water, one-handed snacks, a charger that reaches, muslins and nursing pads within arm's reach. Our guide to setting up a night feed station has the full list.
2. Keep the lights low
“Keep the lights low so you don't feel wide awake by the time they're asleep again.”
A soft, dimmable breastfeeding night light gives you enough light to see the latch without switching on the big light.
3. Stop counting the hours
“Try not to count how many hours you've got left to sleep. I used to do it all night and just get more frustrated.”
4. Go easy on yourself the next day
“Don't put pressure on yourself to get everything done after a rough night. Have an easy day if you can.”
5. Ask for help, even small help
“Asking for help doesn't have to be so scary. Whether it's 'can you hold bub while I shower', 'grab a few extra groceries on your next run' or 'pop something in the dryer'.”
6. Let visitors help
“You don't need to host anyone. If they're coming over to help, let them help.”
7. Remember it's temporary
“Knowing this is temporary and won't last forever was my way to find gratitude in it when feeling frustrated.”
And the one we come back to most: “You don't have to enjoy every night to love your baby.”
